CONCORD, N.C. -- NASCAR issued the No. 24 Monster Energy Cup Series team of Hendrick Motorsports an L-1 level penalty following post-race inspection at Chicagoland Speedway.

The No. 24 of Chase Elliott was found to be in violation of section 20.20 of the NASCAR rule book, which pertains to the modification of components to affect the aerodynamics of the car.

As a result, Elliott was docked 15 championship driver points and Hendrick Motorsports lost 15 championship owner points. Elliott's runner-up finish in the playoff opener was deemed encumbered, and crew chief Alan Gustafson was fined $25,000 and suspended one race. The penalty drops Elliott from sixth to eighth in the championship standings.

Hendrick Motorsports announced that Kenny Francis, former crew chief of the No. 5 driven by Kasey Kahne, will serve as interim crew chief at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
