Feburary 17, 1997-1996 Indy 500 winner Buddy Lazier of Hemelgarn Racing and Tony Stewart of Team Menard ran the Indy Racing League's first tire testing at Texas Motor Speedway. Stewart was clocked at just over 200 mph on the 1.5 mile 24 degree banked oval

Then on April 22, 1997 the Texas Motor Speedway General Manager Eddie Gossage along with Dan Cotter, chief executive of True Value, announced sponsorship of the Inaugural True Value 500 Indy Racing League night event June 7.

Billy Boat won the inaugural True Value 500. Arie Luyendyk challenges the decision in Victory Lane following the race, resulting in a confrontation with Boat's car owner A.J. Foyt.
